New Arrivals. Berhow William W. Feaster John G. Life After Residency: A Career Planning Guide is an insightful, step-by-step guide to achieving a successful and fulfilling career in medicine.

Melissa Berhow, William Feaster, and John Brock-Utne began running seminars to advise their residents not only on creating a curriculum vitae and landing a great job, but also on how to manage student loan payments and avoid pitfalls in the life of a physician. The immense success and ensuing demand for more seminars eventually gave rise to Life After Residency—a book which continues the seminar discussions in greater depth and magnitude, while maintaining a conversational writing style. Key topics covered include: preparing for a job interview, evaluating job offers and negotiating contracts, obtaining and maintaining the proper State license, applying for membership onto Medical Staffs, obtaining malpractice insurance, buying a house and investing for eventual retirement, and pursuing non-medical career options.

Loaded with sage advice and practical wisdom, Life After Residency is an invaluable asset to every resident during the transition from residency to life thereafter. Reviews Review Policy. Evan Willis. Medical Dominance, now in a revised edition, provides a fascinating account of the medical profession's successful domination of a wide range of health care services. Evan Willis delves into the past to explain the existing division of labour and health care, the rise of the medical profession to a position of economic power within the health system, and their defence of that dominant position.

Now completely revised and updated, this edition also considers the related question of the policy implications of medical dominance. The defence by doctors of their position of power is highlighted by the author's exhaustive and original research into demarcation struggles between medicine and other health occupations, in particular midwifery, optometry and chiropractic. Conventional explanations of medical dominance are challenged by the argument that the role of developments in medical knowledge and in technology itself have been overstated.

As well, greater account must be taken of the social relations and struggles which developed for control of that knowledge and technology. The Appraiser's Handbook: v. Nick Lyons.

This is an invaluable, detailed guide offering practical resources for medical professionals in the challenging role of appraiser. It assists with confidence, professionalism and competency and contains a comprehensive, up-to-date summary of the 'state of play' for appraising doctors.

It also includes sample forms, contracts for guidance and links to web resources. Appraisal leads and managers in primary and secondary care trusts will find it of great interest, as will clinical tutors, GP tutors and deanery educational teams.

The appraiser will find appraisees who enthusiastically embrace appraisal and those who doubt its use and place in their professional development. Different approaches may be needed to support and understand different individuals. It will help doctors learning to be appraisers, and experienced appraisers. It will also help those organising appraisal, to remind them of the aims of the process.

Teachers of appraisal will be able to use it to supplement and support their curricula. I believe revalidation, when it arrives, will be the single biggest step towards improvement taken by the profession, since the introduction of the medical register. I also believe this depends upon the inclusion of appraisal within the revalidation package.

Putting high-quality, developmental appraisal 'in the water' for the medical profession will bring about a whole-profession shift in terms of lifelong professional development. This book will support that aim. Theory in a Nutshell. Don Nutbeam. Highly Commended in the British Medical Association book awards !! Melvin Lee. Don't have a Kindle? The book is mostly common sense but still quite helpful. For those thinking about buying it, I definitely would. That being said, I do prefer "The Ultimate Guide" which has a timeline for your job search and goes more into different payment options fixed, productivity based, and variations thereof , as well as all the same chapters offered by "Life After. Both had odd examples for CVs and I ended up using the internet as a better guide.

Both have tiny sections on using your MD for careers outside of medicine which I would think if you were considering it these books are not that useful. Go to Amazon. Unlimited One-Day Delivery and more.
